Amazon’s Tax Dodge: Bezos' Billion-Dollar Betrayal

Writer: Loren CossetteLoren Cossette

Amazon, one of the world’s wealthiest corporations, has mastered the art of tax avoidance—legally, but at what cost to society? While raking in billions, the company has sidestepped paying its fair share, depriving communities of essential resources. Over the past 16 years, Amazon should have contributed $41.2 billion in taxes based on statutory rates. Instead, it paid just $29.2 billion, leaving a $12 billion gap—money that could have funded schools, healthcare, and housing.

The 2017 Tax Reform: A Gift to Corporations, A Loss for Communities

Before the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, Amazon’s tax payments were relatively aligned with expectations. However, once the corporate tax rate dropped from 35% to 21%, Amazon’s tax burden plummeted even further—down to an average 14.3%. In 2022, the company even had a negative effective tax rate of -37.4%, meaning taxpayers subsidized a corporate giant.

The Real Cost of Amazon’s Tax Evasion

Amazon’s tax avoidance isn’t just an accounting trick—it’s a moral failure with real-world consequences. That missing $12 billion could have funded:

  • 2.4 million children’s education ($5,000 per student/year)

  • 7.5 billion meals for food-insecure families ($1.60 per meal)

  • 240,000 affordable housing units ($50K per unit)

  • Mental health care for 6 million people ($2,000 per person/year)

  • Homelessness services for 1.2 million individuals ($10K per person/year)

Amazon Wins, Society Loses

Amazon exploits research tax credits, stock-based compensation loopholes, accelerated depreciation, and offshore tax havens to shrink its tax bill. While shareholders profit, communities, especially marginalized groups, bear the brunt, with underfunded schools, inadequate healthcare, and rising homelessness.

Our system is built to serve corporations over people. Until tax policies prioritize fairness over loopholes, the wealthiest will continue to dodge their duties while everyday people pay the price.
