In a recent experiment, I asked a well-known GPT to generate an image of The Nerd Herd, a diverse interdisciplinary group breaking through a barrier, symbolizing progress, innovation, and social impact. The result? A starkly biased image: while the initial depiction included a mix of individuals, the AI transformed the barrier-breakers into 100% WHITE MEN.

AI Mirrors Systemic Biases—And That’s a Problem

The issue here isn’t that AI is creating bias out of nowhere; it’s that AI is trained on data that reflects society’s inequalities. When AI models learn from datasets dominated by white men in leadership, innovation, and technological progress, they naturally perpetuate these biases.


Some key reasons why:


  • Historical Inequality in Data: Media archives, corporate records, and educational materials often underrepresent women and people of color in STEM and leadership roles. AI learns from these patterns and assumes them as the default.

  • The Default “Success” Archetype: In Western society, leadership is still primarily associated with white men. When AI interprets "barrier-breaking" and "innovation," it reproduces the dominant narrative instead of a diverse reality.

  • Bias in AI Development: Many AI models are developed by teams that are not diverse themselves, leading to blind spots in data curation and model training.


This matters because AI is increasingly embedded in hiring, lending, law enforcement, healthcare, and education decision-making processes. If left unchecked, it will continue reinforcing the inequalities many are working to dismantle.



The AI Leadership Competency Model (AILCM): A Framework for Ethical AI


Addressing AI bias requires more than tweaking algorithms; it requires leadership. The AI Leadership Competency Model (AILCM) ensures that AI decision-makers have the awareness, skills, and ethical grounding to guide AI development responsibly.


Key Competencies of AILCM


  1. Bias Detection & Mitigation – AI leaders must be trained to recognize, measure, and correct biases in data, training methods, and outputs.

  2. Diversity-First Thinking: Instead of “fixing” diversity as an afterthought, AI should be developed with inclusivity as its foundation.

  3. Interdisciplinary Awareness – AI is not just a technical field. Leaders must understand sociology, ethics, history, and human behavior to design equitable systems.

  4. Community-Centered AI – AI should be co-designed with diverse communities to ensure it serves people equitably, rather than imposing dominant narratives.

  5. Accountability in AI Decision-Making: AI leaders must be held responsible for the societal impact of their technologies, and transparency and oversight must be built into every stage of development.


From Awareness to Action: What Comes Next?


The solution isn’t just fixing biased AI models; it’s changing who leads, designs, and regulates AI. We need a new class of AI leaders trained in machine learning, ethics, justice, and equity.


That’s why interdisciplinary groups, like The Nerd Herd, are critical. By bringing together AI/ML experts, artists, anthropologists, educators, crisis counselors, and project managers, we can build AI that reflects all of society, not just a privileged few.


The AI Leadership Competency Model isn’t just a framework. It’s a call to action. If we don’t change who shapes AI, AI will shape the world in the image of the past. It’s time for a new vision of leadership, one that ensures AI works for everyone.
